Monday 31st August, 2020.
Today I went to the seaside. I drove about seven miles to a place pointed out by a local friend who knows the Fife Principality better than anyone. He sent me a map and marked the minor lanes and pathways to a place he described as ' my personal earthly paradise and Mellow's ( his dog) delight'.
The day started with bright sunshine. By midday it was beginning to cloud over but I had decided I wanted a break and a break I took.
I found the place. Without exaggeration the sand went beyond where my eye could see. The sun shone for the three hours I was there. The wind blew and whipped up the small waves and scattered some of the dune sands. It was deserted except for two dog walkers and many seagulls. I had parked and walked over coarse grass dunes and down on to the beach. Utterly beautiful. I felt utterly free and away from noise, technology and the detritus of living.
The wind blew my worries away, my feet relished the walk and then I took off my shoes and froze my toes. I felt like a reborn child. Heavenly...and it has made me feel tired in the luxuriant satisfied way of lots of fresh air. As I have said the sun shone where I was walking the whole time I was there. I discovered it had rained back at my home.
I drove back and saw at a more crowded beach and forest spot a van selling crepes. There were quite a few cars and even an open lavatory ( with a permanent cleaner standing by...he sanitises it every half hour, a payee of the local Council) so feeling hungry I stopped. By the time I arrived there the crepe van owners had decided trade was coming to an end. So they advertised special deals but not the last day of the Chancellor's package, just their own.
One crepe filled with crab. Then one crepe with molasses and lemon. Two for the price of a cup of coffee in central St Andrews.
I am a selfish man so will not tell you the place I went. I am also a thoughtful man so will not upset you or cause you to be jealous be telling you the cost of my two crepes.
What a day, what a glorious day.
